Many of our customers are often confused by the material grades on the drawings when they are given drawings of the parts they need to purchase. For example, customers who need to purchase silicone casting parts are usually European and American customers, and most of the drawings of European customers are marked with material grades such as 1.4308, 1.4408, etc. For those who are in contact with such material grades for the first time, they can only seek help by using search sites such as Google.
The chart below shows a rough cross-reference of stainless steel grades, but it is not very accurate.

Drawing on the premise of the table above, we still ask customers to double-check the specific grade of the product, as well as the chemical composition.
For example, the American Standard 304 American National Standard ASTM A312,
the standard chemical composition is as follows.
C ≤ 0.08 Si ≤ 1.0 Mn ≤ 2.0 Cr18.00-20.00 Ni8.00-12.00 S ≤ 0.030 P ≤ 0.045
While 304 corresponds to the EU BSEN standard 1.4301,
the standard chemical composition is as follows.
C≤0.07 Si≤1.0 Mn≤2.0 Cr17.50-19.50 Ni8.00-10.50 S≤0.015 P≤0.045 N≤0.11
The requirements of the four elements C, Cr, S, and N are still slightly different.
Therefore, whether it is our sales staff, or the customer's procurement staff, in the encounter of different countries of material grades, or need to confirm each other specific chemical composition, so as to avoid later sample development and mass production of material quality problems, after all, casting material, that is, chemical composition, is the key to the quality of our casting plant.
To give another example of our recent case.
The final customer's drawing at the time of inquiry stated that the material grade was SCH13, and both we and our customer looked up the chemical composition of SCH13 on Baidu as follows.
C: 0.26-0.35, Si ≤ 1.00 Mn ≤ 1.00 Cr12.00-14.00 S ≤ 0.030 P ≤ 0.035 Ni ≤ 0.6
And after signing the mold contract and sample contract, the final SCH13 chemical composition sent to us by the customer was as follows
C: 0.20-0.50, Si≤2.00 Mn≤2.00 Cr24.00-28.00 S≤0.040 P≤0.040 Ni≤11-14, Mo≤0.50
Needless to say, with such a material gap, our offer is certainly a loss-making mess.
Therefore, the participants in the inquiry stage, whether it is the sales, procurement, or quotation of the technical staff, we are still very worth the time and effort, two-way confirmation of the material composition, and the end customer to confirm the material composition is also a very need to solidify the process.
We hope that the small examples in this issue will bring you some warning to avoid making the same mistakes as we did in the future.
